Don't Let Him Hit is an inspirational short story based on the author's life, as a young Black kid growing up in a housing project in the deep South during the 1950's. His family and friends affectionately call him "June Bug." As a young boy 12 years old, he has a deep passion for baseball, his family, living in an all black neighborhood and playing for an all Black team. Don't Let him Hit chronicles the highs and lows of a little league baseball player struggling with his identity and his desire to help his team win their first ever championship. He is easily intimidated not only by his view of the opposing team but also by how much his own team depends on him. The psychological impact of a batting slump can be disastrous or it can be a motivating force. June Bug is faced with the challenge of overcoming these obstacles at a crucial moment in the game. Growing up as a "June Bug" in the projects during the '50's and '60's was truly a unique experience. Life comes at you hard when you are living in a sub-culture with few resources. Back in the day, children were disciplined by any responsible adult in the neighborhood. There was no such thing as child abuse. You see, the storms of life are temporary. It's through our faith in God that sees us through. And for those individuals who are inspired by the lives of others, let the life of one June Bug be a shining beacon for others who swim in a sea of darkness.
